Classroom sessions: January 22nd and 24th, 6:00 to 10:00 pm
All day field session: January 26th in the Colorado State Forest

Classroom sessions: February 19th and 21st, 6:00 to 10:00 pm
All day field session: February 23rd in the Colorado State Forest
The National Ski Patrol Avalanche Level I course is designed to train backcountry travelers in avalanche avoidance and rescue techniques. The field session will require approximately 6 miles of backcountry skiing or snowshoeing.
Students who successfully complete the course should be able to:
- Identify avalanche terrain; identify basic snow grain types, weak layers and strong layers
- Perform field tests to determine snowpack stability or instability
- Recognize weather and terrain factors contributing to instability
- Apply safe travel techniques
- Perform group and self rescue
- Perform rescue through fast and efficient transceiver use.

Course fee is $100. Class size is limited to 20 individuals and usually fills to capacity.
